Meet the Stewards: Fundación Guanacas

<h2>A mission for nature conservation</h2>In the heart of the jungle of southern Costa Rica, systemic solutions to conservation are connecting nature, science, and people. Refugio Tinti is an incredible example of the resiliency of the land and its stewards as a once-contaminated rice monoculture farming area has been made into a biodiverse wildlife sanctuary.In 2016, Alexander Tinti founded the Refugio Tinti and has since transformed 24 acres of endangered swampland into a thriving ecosystem. It is a collaborative effort between the Refugio team and their local community, government, and NGOs. Like they approach solutions holistically, they draw from a diverse pool of support to achieve their vision for a healthier world.Refugio Tinti is a custodian of Lemu and through our partnership, we hope their work can be amplified, and with more resources, their initiatives are only made stronger.“Our mission is to restore and maintain ecosystems, to enhance biodiversity, and, within this framework, to create economic stability,” said Mario Stepanik, public relations, fundraising, and new project manager at Refugio Tinti.Their main conservation projects are:<ul><li>Systemic reforestation</li><li>Permaculture education</li><li>Diversification of monocultures</li></ul>Their philosophy is that healing natural environments and healing human societies should be done together to make lasting change. They approach all their projects with this systemic mentality, knowing that our natural ecosystems include us, and they are impacted by how we live and use the land. Living in harmony with the landSo how do those at the sanctuary live in harmony with the land?Everything is made and done with great intention. By using white teak trees, an invasive species that are harmful to native plants and animals, they have built structures in which to live, while also helping to reduce the impacts of this environmental issue. In following sustainable architecture they also avoid using electricity because it could harm wildlife. Using compost toilets is another way in which those at the sanctuary work in tandem with nature to fertilize the land with micro-organisms and minimize human impact.“By abstaining from electric lights and continuously closing as many regenerative cycles as possible we are thriving to be a positive member of the ecosystem rather than a neutral, let alone a parasitic one,” said Alexander Tinti in a <a href="https://mahb.stanford.edu/">published interview with MAHB</a>, an initiative with Stanford University.There are many sustainable agriculture methods Refugio Tinti uses in a web of interconnected activities and initiatives. Here are a few highlights of their efforts:<ul><li>Growing strong herbs alongside vegetable gardens to deter insects without using harmful pesticides.</li><li>Planting species threatened by extinction in soil bags with worm compost.</li><li>Leaving weeds in their food forest to replenish nutrients in the soil.</li><li>Planting Mexican Sunflowers (Tithonia diversifolia) to draw phosphorus from the soil and take nitrogen from the air.</li><li>Creating shallow wildlife ponds to honor the natural wetland ecosystem and support water-reliant species.</li></ul>You can see all of their initiatives in their interactive map here: <a href="https://www.refugiotinti.com/map/">https://www.refugiotinti.com/map/</a><h2>Biodiversity at the sanctuary</h2>Supporting biodiversity is another key aspect of the work at the sanctuary. Costa Rica is estimated to be home to 5% of the world’s biodiversity due to its climate and location nestled between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. Yet, Costa Rica isn’t exempt from the issue of wildlife extinction.This is why protecting endangered species is especially important at the sanctuary. They even have a night guard to watch out for predatory animals and to safeguard the safety of all those who call Refugio Tinti home.These are the key species Refugio Tinti protects:<ul><li>Boat-billed heron (C. cochlearius)</li><li>Curassow (Crax rubra)</li><li>Grison (Galictis vittata)</li><li>Jaguarundi (Herpallurus yagouaroundi)</li><li>Neotropical river otter (Lontra longicaudis)</li><li>Ocelot (Leopardus pardalis)</li></ul>One of these species, the jaguarundi is especially endangered due to poaching and loss of their natural habitats. This animal is unique because it is the only wild cat in Costa Rica that is active during the day. Jaguarundis are important to the ecosystem because they maintain levels of small mammals and birds they hunt as prey as well as regulating amounts of pests that impact agriculture.<h2>Systemic solutions</h2>Their work goes deeper than what you can see. There is research and reason behind everything, because just like roots under the surface, at Refugio Tinti Alexander and the team value finding the root causes of issues and addressing those problems holistically.Lack of education, population growth, and poverty are all root causes of environmental degradation. Identifying the “why” behind this degradation is important because all health and environmental issues are interconnected and solutions need to be made addressing whole systems rather than singular issues. For example, monoculture farming where only one type of crop is planted is a contemporary solution to the demand for cheap food to address higher population and poverty, but because it doesn’t account for the health of ecosystems this method results in erosion and depletion of nutrients in the soil.<blockquote>Refugio Tinti highlights a way that nature corrects for some of the damage from monoculture farming. Nature’s solution is brilliantly simple: weeds. While weeds have come to be commonly seen as a nuisance, they actually draw nutrients up to the surface of the soil. Our Earth is wise. By learning from the way it heals itself, we can better learn how to be sustainable stewards like those at Refugio Tinti.</blockquote>Long-term Refugio Tinti looks to establish an ecovillage in La Gamba, Costa Rica, with a permaculture education center. Imagine waking up to the calming sounds of nature, preparing your own food using resources from the land, and walking barefoot through some of the most beautiful landscapes nature has to offer. This sounds like a dream especially at a time when growing urbanization has removed us more and more from nature and its healing abilities.This was the vision for the founders of <a href="https://somosnativos.cl/">Somos Nativos</a>, a foundation that seeks to give the public an opportunity to be at one one with nature.Somos Nativos has created a network of parks in which nature lovers can enjoy access to natural spaces in a way that is no longer readily available.The foundation not only encourages physically immersing one in largely untouched land, but also promotes education around how to conserve nature, and the value that preserving ecosystems can offer.<h1>Parks and recreation: Kaikén School Park</h1><a href="https://somosnativos-cl.translate.goog/parque-escuela?_x_tr_sl=es&amp;_x_tr_tl=en&amp;_x_tr_hl=en&amp;_x_tr_pto=sc">Kaiken School Park</a> was the first of the foundation’s parks. About four hours’ drive from Coyhaique, in Chile’s Aysén Region.The park, which is mostly unaltered by humans, is a breathtaking stretch of 3500 hectares.It is here that groups of school children or the general public can “camp” out either in a large barn-like warehouse that houses up to 35 beds, or around campsites. There are activities available, including tours of the park (five to six hours) which can be enjoyed over a number of days.During this time, lessons about the history of the land, its ancestors, the climate, flora and fauna are explored.Also, visitors are given a glimpse to a time of old, when man was fully reliant on Mother Nature, and all she has to offer.Follow Lemu on <a href="https://www.instagram.com/lemuearth/?hl=en">Instagram</a> and Twitter.Some of the other ways in which visitors are taught includes being encouraged to cook their own food, chop up firewood, fish and do some gardening.In Summer, there are the pristine lakes in which to swim in.The park offers a diverse group of guides that include those who are endemic to the land. The 1500 hectare reserve is found in Cochamo, in the Llanquihue Province, Los Lagos Region.Today, they are promoting two School Parks, Aysén and Cochamó respectively. Meet the Stewards: 3 Reasons why we love The Nature Conservancy (TNC)

<h1>A conservation haven for the cotton-top tamarin</h1>Were it not for Colombia’s conservation project, Proyecto Tití, we might be speaking of the critically endangered <a href="https://medium.com/@sthef/bb1c9cd82ece">cotton-top tamarin</a> as a species of the past.Having dwindled at an alarming rate over the past few decades because of deforestation, the illegal pet trade and competition for resources with the surrounding impoverished communities, the cotton-top tamarin needed urgent intervention to survive.Enter <a href="https://www.proyectotiti.com/en-us/About-Proyecto-Tit%C3%AD/History">Dr. Anne Savage</a>, whose aim to start the first conservation project for the adorable cotton-top tamarin started as far back as 1987.<a href="https://www.proyectotiti.com/en-us">Proyecto Tití</a> was thus founded with the understanding that for the adorable monkeys to survive, long-term field data would need to be gathered to better understand Colombia’s endemic primates.<blockquote>Read more about the cotton-top tamarins and the significant contributions it makes to the forests here.</blockquote>Despite the extensive field research, Dr. Savage soon realized that the science alone would not be enough if the involvement of the community was not prioritized. Since the establishment of Proyecto Tití, it now offers:<ul><li>Long-term field research</li><li>Conservation <a href="https://www.proyectotiti.com/en-us/Communities-Cotton-tops/Community-Education-Programs">education programs</a></li><li><a href="https://www.proyectotiti.com/en-us/Communities-Cotton-tops/Community-Engagement">Community empowerment</a> and communication programs</li></ul>As the saying goes: “many hands make for light work”. Understanding that collaboration can only improve the protection efforts for the cotton-top tamarin, Proyecto Tití also works with other stewards like <a href="https://www.rainforesttrust.org/">Rainforest Trust</a> who, together, worked to save 44.5 hectares of land (now known as Los Titíes de San Juan) from deforestation when it was under the threat of becoming a cattle ranch. Los Titíes de San Juan: The Reserve<a href="https://runap.parquesnacionales.gov.co/area-protegida/1241">Los Titíes de San Juan</a> Reserve was established in 2015. Through its creation and subsequent growth, it offers areas and refuge for cotton-top tamarins and other species such as:<ul><li>Brown-headed spider monkeys (Ateles fusciceps)</li><li>Yellow- striped poison frog (Dendrobates leucomelas)</li><li>Scarlet macaw (Ara macao)</li><li>Northern tamandua (Tamandua mexicana)</li></ul>At Lemu, we strive to make this and other similar projects more visible to everyone. The evolution of bonobos as we know them today happened in the equatorial forests south of the Congo River, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This, simply put, means that it is their home: they can’t survive anywhere else in the world. This is key to understand why a project at that exact location is key to maintain an ensure their survival. <a href="https://gacebb.org/">Project GACEBB</a>, which is acronym for Groupe D'appui À La Conservation Des Ecosystèmes De Basankusu Et Bolomba, took on the mission to safeguard them.How does GACEBB work? By implementing income generating micro-projects for the local communities to improve their socio-economic conditions and by that, to reduce pressure on bonobos and their habitat. They also have an education program to sensitize the population about the importance and fragility of ecosystems and a climate change fight program aimed to restore deforested areas. To be precise, GACEBB initiatives are:<ul><li>Giving Bonobos a Chance: Finding Alternatives to Hunting and Consumption</li></ul>GACEBB is all about finding practical solutions to protect bonobos. They work hard to set up micro-projects that offer sustainable alternatives to hunting and eating bonobos meat. By providing better choices, they reduce the threat to this endangered species.<ul><li>Spreading the Word: Educating Communities on Nature and Bonobos</li></ul>GACEBB believes that awareness is the key to conservation. That's why they run environmental awareness programs in local communities. By working with these organizations, they find ways to strike a balance between human needs and nature's well-being.<ul><li>Empowering Women for a Better Future: Gender Integration Matters</li></ul>GACEBB has a special focus on empowering women and girls in the Southern Basankusu region. They offer training and support to Women's FO on gender integration issues. Through these efforts, they promote gender parity in conservation and beyond.<ul><li>Involving Communities in Forest Conservation: Everybody's Responsibility</li></ul>GACEBB believes that local communities play a crucial role in protecting forests. That's why they train them in the Community Forestry (CF) process. By understanding how to obtain forest concessions and manage forests sustainably, communities become stewards of their own natural resources.With practical initiatives and a down-to-earth approach, GACEBB is making a real difference in bonobo conservation. Is it Friday already? They don’t know, and don’t seem to care. This is the way Bonobos, our closest cousins from the anthropomorphic ape community, live and probably want to keep on living. And honestly, who wouldn’t?A quick look at them could mistake them with chimpanzees (and that wouldn’t be exactly wrong). But a closer look, observing their peaceful behavior and more slender bodies would be conclusive: we are in the presence of a different species. In fact, science has discover recently that our most peaceful traits as humans have evolved from these amazing creatures.Is it possible that our long for peace is stronger than our long for war? Indeed, the scientists behind the study, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), agree in the fact that we Bonobos more prone to peace than violence.Unfortunately, they can’t be at ease as they would want to, because many threats lurk within their borders: deforestation, soil degradation, poaching and the poverty that force communities to hunt them to eat their meat or sell it. Today, it is estimated that the world has between 15,000 to 50,000 bonobos left and their population continues to decline due mainly to poaching and habitat loss, as well as their low reproduction rate due mainly to long interbirth intervals. This is why they are classified as endangered by the IUCN list and why they need us to protect them.

Project GACEBB, an initiative to protect bonobos

Yet, amidst these trials, a glimmer of hope shines through. While the task of safeguarding animals and their habitats might seem daunting, there are tangible actions we can take. Coastal and marine areas also face degradation due to human activities.Climate ChangeClimate change is emerging as a major threat to wildlife survival. Rising temperatures, melting ice caps, and changing precipitation patterns are disrupting ecosystems worldwide. This has far-reaching implications for species adapted to specific climates.Impact: Changes in temperature, sea level rise, melting ice caps, and altered precipitation patterns are already impacting ecosystems and species.Invasive SpeciesInvasive species pose a significant threat to native wildlife. These non-native organisms can outcompete or even eradicate native species, disrupting ecosystems.Impact: Approximately 42% of threatened species are at risk due to invasive species. Quizapú Natural Park is the ideal environment for those nature lovers who are not afraid to venture into the mountains of Chile. Learn about them here!<h1>3 curiosities about Quizapú Park</h1><ul><li>Quizapú Natural Park is located in the central Andes of Chile, in the Maule Region, about three hours south of Santiago. The reserve covers an area of 2060 hectares, and was acquired in December 2019 by its current steward, <a href="https://www.trekkingchile.com/">TrekkingChile Foundation.</a></li><li>A wide biodiversity ranging from small mammals to snakes and condors can be found in Quizapú.</li><li>Recently, an exploration was carried out with the aim of gathering information about the fauna and flora in which dozens of species were recorded, about which we tell you below.</li></ul><blockquote>Did you know that…?Its name comes from the enormous explosion crater <a href="https://www.volcanochile.com/joomla30/index.php/contenidos/12-educacion/17-volcan-quizapu-1932-una-de-las-mayores-erupciones-del-siglo-xx#:~:text=Es%20un%20centro%20eruptivo%20adventicio,Gonz%C3%A1lez%2DFerr%C3%A1n%2C%201995">Quizapú</a>. Its last recorded eruption dates back to 1932.</blockquote><h1>How to Get Access to the Park</h1>Although there are two entrances to the park, it can only be reached on horseback or on foot in the company of local <a href="https://www.trekkingchile.com/es/viajar/rent-a-guide/">guides</a>. Permission must be requested in writing as it is a protected area.In general, those adventurers who enter the park are mainly dedicated to training tour guides, hiking guides and ecotourism. Research and tourism in the Quizapú Natural ParkWhile the Quizapú Park is still a relatively unexplored natural area, it is available for research activities, which are supported by the Trekkingchile Foundation.Only the “<a href="https://www.trekkingchile.com/es/el-largo-transito-del-sendero-de-chile-2000-2021/">Sendero de Chile</a>” trail is accessible for limited guided tourism activities with local guides.<h1>Biodiversity and conservation of Quizapú Park</h1>Recently, an exploration of the park was carried out by Chilean specialists, with the objective of gathering information about the fauna and flora of the area.During the expedition, which took place in the summer months, dozens of species were registered through the use of 20 trail cameras.
