On a day like today 46 years ago, the “International Seminar on Environmental Education” (declaration of the United Nations Conference) was held in Belgrade. This congregation pioneered not only in bringing together great authorities from more than 70 countries, but also in bringing to the fore a major problem when setting short and long-term objectives on caring for the environment. Today, 46 years later, the fear of a possible climate crisis has almost transformed into certainty, and the mitigation, conservation and reversal actions of this climate crisis must happen now. The main foundation for this problem is based on the need for better Environmental Education. But, how do we achieve “better” education?
We have raised 3 main keys to ensure environmental education improvement:
We know that empathy does not necessarily come from having lived such an experience, but from a deep understanding of the subject. When we talk about the environment, this understanding comes from knowledge. Having an early, conscious and consistent education about caring for the planet, boost the capacity of individuals to distinguish those actions jeopardizing the ecosystem, making them naturally avoid disruptive behaviors and invite third parties to improve their habits.
2.DEVELOP Evaluation Capacity:
It is common to face decision situations related to this issue, like whether or not to throw plastic in the organic waste container or use a car to go to work instead of using a bicycle. Day-to-day examples that may seem irrelevant if we do not have developed the capacity of discernment. This ability can be enhanced by continuously learning about the subject. Education in this context is not only about teaching courses in a school or university, but it is a continuous process that must be taken over on a daily basis at every bus stop, subway station, advertising poster and / or production process, turning both public and private spaces into massive awareness hubs.
The action of doing and preaching on the subject, being “influencers” among those around us, promoting the use of renewable energies from the macro of the society (like the Industries), to the core, which we all shape as individuals. This is the most important aspect today, because without participation and dissemination, the efforts of many will be overshadowed by the disinterest and ignorance of others. It is crucial to put environmental education as a top priority in communities if we want to mitigate and reverse climate change, with the aim of ensuring the wellbeing of this generation and those who come.
